SCIENTIFIC NAME: Taxodium distichum

COMMON NAME: bald cypress

LEAVES: Deciduous. Alternate. Leaves originate around the twig. About 3" long.

BARK: Fibrous.

GROWTH RATE: 1.7 ft./yr. in our shade tree study.

OTHER: Grows 80' to 90' tall but not very wide. Pyramidal shape. Has knees on wet sites (don't know the purpose of the knees). Rust fall color. Native to low/moist sites, but will grow on high/dry sites. Will grow from Alabama to Maine. A member of the Taxodiaceae family. Very good landscape tree. Should be used more commonly.
