SCIENTIFIC NAME: Quercus velutina

COMMON NAME: black oak

LEAVES: 5 to 8 lobes with yellow pubescence underneath. Buds are very pubescent, and generally large sometimes up to 1/2" long.

BARK: Very dark ridge and furrowed.

OTHER: Native to high, dry sites. Grows up to 60' tall and 40' wide. Not common in the trade. Drought tolerant due to tap root. Leave on site if found. A yellow dye can be made from the bark.
