SCIENTIFIC NAME: Quercus prinus

COMMON NAME: chestnut oak

LEAVES: 12 to 14 pairs of crenations and mostly glabrous. Thin leaf and widest in the middle or above. Up to 10" in length.

FRUIT: Acorn up to 1" in diameter. Acorn cap is funnel shaped and the scales are meshed together.

BARK: Ridged and furrowed. Only chestnut leaved oak with this type bark. Gray.

GROWTH RATE: 2.7 ft./yr. in our shade tree study.

OTHER: Funnel shaped acorn cap. Meshed scales on the cap. Native to high/dry or intermediate sites. Low water requirements. Easy to transplant. A good medium textured landscape tree. Averaging over 2' per year of growth in our shade tree study. City of Savannah, GA is using this species as a street tree. Southern Living in Birmingham is using this tree around their parking deck. Very nice specimen out at the Auburn Airport.
