SCIENTIFIC NAME: Quercus phellos

COMMON NAME: willow oak

LEAVES: Glabrous, thin, and deciduous. Drops all the leaves at one time. Grow 3" to 6" long. Yellow fall color. Margins of leaf almost become parallel.

FRUIT: Small acorn less than half an inch in diameter.

BARK: Gray and ridge and furrowed.

OTHER: Grows 60' to 80' tall. Round shape. Fine texture and fast growing. One of the willow leaved oaks. Native to Alabama. Has fibrous roots and is drought tolerant. Can be moved up to 12" in caliper. Averaging over 2' per year of growth in our shade tree study. One of our truly important landscape trees. Nearly every major project uses this tree. Spider mites can be a problem but only turns the foliage brown and does not kill the tree. Willow oak is a winner!!
