
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Quercus palustris
COMMON NAME: pin oak
LEAVES: 5 to 7 lobes with deep "U" shaped sinuses. Glabrous. Has few bristle tips, per narrow lobe. Up to 5" in length.
GROWTH RATE: 2.4 ft./yr in our shade tree study.
BARK: Gray and ridge and furrowed.
OTHER: Native to low, moist sites from Tennessee north. Lower branches hang down, middle branches are horizontal, and upper branches are vertical. Lots of pins (side shoots) come off the branches. Biggest selling oak in the trade. Must be used on low/moist sites. Can be moved up to 12" in caliper. Will not tolerate high pH soils where iron deficiency becomes a serious problem. Some trees have good fall color and others do not. Tends to hold leaves during the winter.
