The Department of Horticulture at Auburn University is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor in the tree fruit program area.  The fruit industry in Alabama accounts for a major portion of the $57 million in annual cash receipts.  The Buy Fresh, Buy Local promotional campaign and the increased awareness of the great health value of fresh fruits are influences that position the fruit industry to have an even greater impact on our state’s economy.  The expected start date is August 16, 2008.  Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities:  This is a 9-month tenure track position (75% research, 25% instruction) in the tree fruit program area.  Instructional responsibilities will include teaching Fruit and Nut Production (HORT 2010) and 1/3 of the Horticulture Crop Production (HORT 2020) courses.  In addition, the candidate will be expected to advise undergraduate students, as well as direct and advise graduate students.  Research responsibilities include developing and implementing a nationally recognized research program in the area of tree fruit crops, which may include Satsuma mandarins, peaches, plums, apples, pears, Asian persimmon, and chestnuts.  The research program is expected to address important production constraints of existing and potential crops, the results of which are expected to be presented to growers locally and at national and international scientific meetings.  The successful candidate will be expected to identify and secure extramural funding to support programs and summer salary, publish technical and refereed articles, effectively collaborate with departmental faculty, state and regional growers, and colleagues in other disciplines.  Departmental, college, and university committee service will be expected.

Qualifications:  Minimum qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Horticulture or a closely related field by the position starting date.  Successful candidates should have documented experience and/or demonstrated ability to develop a research program in individual and collaborative research resulting in peer reviewed publications. A demonstrated subject matter knowledge and the ability to teach university level courses in fruit and nut production are required.  In addition, candidate must possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences.  Candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both in writing and speech.   The candidate selected for the position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time of appointment.

Research Assistant I/II - Associate I

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: provide advanced level administrative and professional assistance to researchers for horticultural programs and projects; provide professional assistance for development of project plans/protocols; manage horticultural field and laboratory projects; design, install and maintain experiments; collect, record, process, interpret and present data in moderately complex to complex cases; perform reviews of literature and grant proposals; and provide supervision of student workers.
Responsibility areas of this position include 50% in laboratory research and 50% to applied nursery research.  
Designation as a Research Assistant requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Horticulture or closely related field. Designation as a Research Associate requires a Master's degree from an accredited institution in Horticulture or closely related. Knowledge of horticultural research is required. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, demonstrated technical excellence and the ability to work independently are also required. Applicant must have experience with Excel and Word. Candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States. Applicants must attach cover letter and resume to the on-line application. Agri Technician III/IV  

**This is a 1 year limited term position. Continuation of employment is based on availability of funding.** Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: perform routine measurements and analyses on research projects and other non-hazardous lab work; operate tractors, bagging equipment, soil mixers, and other horticultural equipment; perform fertilizer calibrations, measurements, and applications; pot, water, prune, and load plants; and other duties as assigned.  
The minimum qualifications are the ability to read and write and 5 years experience or a high school diploma or GED and 4 years experience or an Associate's degree from an accredited institution. Knowledge of horticultural crops is essential. Applicant must have a valid drivers license. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, demonstrated technical excellence and ability to work independently are also required. Candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the U.S. by the employment date. Send letter of application and resume.  
Basic computer skills, experience with Excel and other data entry software, and prior experience in horticulture facilities maintenance are desired.
