The distribution of the genus Ergasilus in several Gulf of Mexico drainage basins is examined with emphasis on host relationships and distributional patterns. Gill material was examined from 6,965 fishes representing over 3,000 host localities. Specimens examined were obtained primarily from ichthyological museums. Host relationships and geographical distributions are discussed. Definite host preferences for the various Ergasilus species are established and the species showing such preferences are discussed for each fish family. Generalized patterns of distribution are noted. Numerous new distributional and host records are established and a revised parasite-host checklist for the genus is presented. A comprehensive bibliography on the genus in North America is included.
