Different numbers and weights of goldfish, Carassius auratus Linn., and fatheads, Pimephales promelas Raf., were placed in sealed jars under a volume of oxygen equal to that of water plus fish at constant temperatures of 50oF and 60oF and at the room temperature range of 74oF to 84oF. The carrying capacity of 1,875 cc (approximately 1/2 gallon) of water plus fish was determined. Fifty 2-inch goldfish weighing 150 grams (0.33 pound) were carried for 48 hours at the room temperature range: 75 weighing 208 grams (0.46 pound) at 60oF. Sixty 2-inch fatheads weighing 119 grams (0.26 pound) were carried for 48 hours at the room temperature range: 80 weighing 140 grams (0.31 pound) at 60oF: and 90 weighing 149 grams (0.33 pound) at 50oF. Fish in plastic bags lived as well as those in jars. Water was analyzed at the end of each experiment and the average concentrations of dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, and ammonia (as NH3) in which 85 per cent or more survived were computed. For goldfish, the dissolved O2 content was 8.0 ppm at room temperature (74oF-84oF): 7.0 ppm at 60oF. For fatheads, it was 7.0 ppm at room temperature (74oF-84oF): 11.0 ppm at 60oF: and 11.0 ppm at 50oF. The free CO2 content for goldfish was 91.0 ppm at room temperature (74oF-84oF): 53.0 ppm at 60oF. For fatheads it was 69.0 ppm at room temperature (74oF-84oF): 187.0 ppm at 60oF: and 143.0 ppm at 50oF. The ammonia content for goldfish was 9.0 ppm at room temperature (74oF-84oF): 5.0 ppm at 60oF. For fatheads, it was 9.0 ppm at room temperature (74oF-84oF): 24 ppm at 60oF: and 12.0 ppm at 50oF. The pH ranged from 5.8 to 6.3 at all temperatures. In aquaria at room temperatures the asphyxial level of ammonia was 20 ppm for fatheads and 30 ppm for goldfish.
