A preimpoundment age and growth study of the bluegill sunfish was conducted for the proposed West Point Reservoir during 1972-1973. A total of 567 bluegill was collected from the Chattahoochee River and its tributaries by seining and electrofishing.Age and growth determinations were accomplished by measuring annual growth marks on scale impressions. Time of annulus formation was found to be between April-June. Body-scale relationship is expressed by the formula L = 19.52 + 0.83 S. Back-calculated lengths at annuli 1 to 9 were 38.2, 64.4, 95.0, 118.6, 141.5, 160.4, 177.3, 195.8 and 217.0 mm. There was a significant difference in growth between sexes only in age-group 5. A sex ratio of 1.4 females to each male was found. Both sexes reached maturity by the second year of life. The length-weight relationships for the 522 bluegill collected were log W = -5.125 + 3.161 log L (logarithmic form) and W = 12.6083 - 0.3796 L + 0.002L2 + 0.000017L3 (third degree polynomial form). Relative condition factors computed by the formula Kn = W/^W and indicated that the bluegill from the study area weighed less than the average for Alabama waters.
