A study was made of the species of Trichodina occuring on the more common freshwater fishes of the Southeastern United States. Eight new species of Trichodina was described. Nine species of Trichodina were redescribed: T. California, T. discoides, T. fultoni, T. pediculus, T. platiformis, T. reticulata, T. sp. (? T. nigra Lon, 1961), T. tumefasciens, T. valiata. The name T. pediculus was re-erected for a new species that occurs on largemouth bass. Host fish were collected from 36 geographical locations in ten states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Lousiana, Mississipi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennesse. A total of 339 fish, representing 16 species, were examined for trichodinid parasites. Two hundred and seventy-nine permanent slides of Trichodina were made. The methods of impregnating formalin preserved specimens of Trichodina are discussed. Lom's uniform specific charateristics for Trichodina are discussed. A key to the species of Trichodina reported from North American freshwater fishes is presented.
