The absorption and excretion of Ca and Mg ions by non-feeding channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in soft water containing 8.6, 4.2, or 0.0 ppm CaCO3 total hardness, and in soft water containing 4.4 ppm Ca hardness, and 4.0 ppm Mg hardness were studied. During the first one to two days, loss of Ca by fish was probably due to laboratory diuresis. After this period, fish took up Ca continuously at mean rates of 0.45 to 0.64 mg Ca/100 g fish/day until the Ca content in the water was nearly depleted. The threshold Ca concentration from which the ions could be absorbed was 0.5 ppm CaCO3 or less. No measurable uptake or loss of Mg ions was observed. The presence or absence of Mg ions did not affect the absorption of Ca by fish.
