A preimpoundment age and growth study of redbreast sunfish was conducted for the proposed West Point Reservoir during 1972. Age and growth determinations were made by measuring annual growth rings on scale impressions. Time of annulus formation was established to be between March and May. Back-calculated length at annulus 1 to 5 were 44.4, 78.7, 120.4, 147.7 and 166.0 millimeters. A significant difference in growth between sexes was indicated only for the 3-year-old fish. Males and females matured by the second year of life. A length-weight relationship was described by the formulae of W = aLb or its logarithmic form, log W = log a+b log L, and the multiple regression, W = bo + b1X + b2X2 + b3X3. Relative condition factors indicated that the redbreast at the study site weighed less than the average for Alabama waters.
