1764Homer Rudolph ( Rudy ) Schmittou came to auburn from tennessee tech university where he had been an div. II all-american football player. his dissertation resulting in the Ph.D. in 1969 reported pioneering work on cage culture of channel catfish. he was then recruited as the first aquaculture extension agent in the u.s. by texas a&m university where he worked from 1969 to 1971 following which he was recruited by dr. swingle back to auburn to work in the expanding international aquaculture program. Rudy worked for the department in the Philippines and Indonesia. He developed and organized the Master of Aquaculture Program in 1984 and taught Aquaculture Production and Extension Methods Following his retirement in 1991, rudy worked in China for 5 years promoting the use of cages to increase fish production.
