1769E. wayne shell, from butler county,.alabama, received a b.s. in 1952 and an m.s. in 1954 in fisheries management from auburn. he served in the u.s. army in germany 1954-56, and then completed a ph.d. from cornell university in 1959. he subsequently joined the faculty at auburn in 1959 where he taught courses in fisheries biology and fish management while doing research in fisheries management and aquaculture and directing graduate studies. he succeeded dr. swingle in 1973 as head of the department of fisheries and allied aquacultures and director of the international center for aquaculture, a position he held until his retirement in 1994. dr. shell guided the department through a period of expansion and many international initiatives with a vision and spirit of compassion that left a strong legacy of achievement. he was widely sought after as a speaker besides authoring several articles and books.
