Well worth the trip! American Fisheries Society The American Fisheries Society (AFS), founded in 1870, is the oldest and largest professional society representing fisheries scientists. AFS promotes scientific research and enlightened management of resources for optimum use and enjoyment by the public. It also encourages a comprehensive education for fisheries scientists and continuing on-the-job training. The AFS publishes some of the world's leading fisheries research journals: the Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, North American Journal of Fisheries Management, The Progressive Fish-Culturist, Journal of Aquatic Animal Health, and Fisheries. It organizes scientific meetings where new results are reported and discussed. In addition to these primary functions, the Society has many other programs in areas such as professional certification, international affairs, public affairs and public information. Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, Inc. The third largest marine research facility in the United States, is located on 500 acres along the Indian River Lagoon portion of the Intracoastal Waterway, between Fort Pierce and Vero Beach, Florida, USA. Scientists and engineers of this world class not-for-profit organization share a commitment to understand and protect the oceans, estuaries and adjacent coastal regions. Sea Grant Nationwide The National Sea Grant College Program is a network of 29 university-based programs in coastal and Great Lake states involving more than 300 institutions nationwide in research, education and the transfer of technology regarding coastal, marine and Great Lakes issues. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is to conserve, protect, and enhance fish and wildlife and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.
