Summary/Recommendations/Objectives:

During 2005 the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquaculturcs, Auburn University (AU).
conducted the 35'" annual survey of biological communities in the Conecuh-Escambia River near
Brewton, Alabama. Prior to the AU studies, the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wisconsin
conducted 15 biological studies in the river. This annual survey is the longest continuous field study
ever conducted by the Fisheries Department. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of
the discharge effiuent \Tom the Jefferson-Smurfit paper mill (Brewton Mill) on water quality and
biotic communities in the Conecuh-Escambia River in southwest Alabama.
