Southern Seed Certification Association Certified Seed Grower's Directory

This directory includes the names, addresses, telephone numbers, crops, and varieties of Alabama and Florida certified seed producers. All fields have been inspected and approved for certified seed production. The seed will actually become certified when all certified seed standards have been met as to purity and germination by laboratory analysis, and these seed have been bagged and tagged in accordance with the standards and regulations of the Southern Seed Certification Association and the association of official seed certifying agencies.

Protected or Patented Crop Varieties

Crop varieties produced in Alabama and Florida for which plant variety protection certificates or patents have been issued or have been applied for are indicated in each variety description. Information regarding infringement of owner's rights should be obtained before producing, saving, or selling any variety subject to protection or patent laws.

BAHIAGRASS

TIFTON 9 (Protected Variety)- Tifton 9 Bahiagrass has the same characteristics of the Pensacola generally grown today and cannot be distinguished from it by characteristic differences. Some tests report a 47% increase in forage production over Pensacola. Tifton 9 is adapted to about the same areas as Pensacola, and is suited for the same purpose, primarily grazing.

COWPEA

ZIPPERCREAM- Developed by the University of Florida, Zippercream is a large-seeded, pest resistant, high yielding cream colored variety for the fresh market and processing. Retention of green color, pleasant texture, and unique flavor make this variety ideal for cooking. This variety has shown marked adaptability to Florida and the Southeastern United States.

PEANUTS

AP-3- ( Protected Variety 1994-PVPA)- AP-3 has medium maturity (135-140 days) and is a runner market-type peanut with semi-prostrate to spreading growth habit. Seed are tan and rounded to somewhat elongated. It has excellent resistance to TSWV and white mold with good resistance to CBR and rhizoctonia.

AP-4 - Developed by Drs. Dan Gorbet and Barry Tillman, University of Florida Acricultural Experiment Station. Released in 2007 under the 1994 Amendment of the Plant Variety Protection Act. the oleic/linoleic fatty acid ration is normal. The maturity range is medium with pod and seed size larger than Florunner. AP-4 carries good tomato spotted wilt virus resistance and tolerance to white mold. Not as resistant to white mold as AP-3. AP-4 has shown good grade characteristics.

AT-07V - Developed by Dr. Earnest Harvey, Golden Peanut Company. Released in 2007 with Plant Variety Protection under the 1994 Amendment to be applied for. A Virginia type variety that does not carry resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus.

AT-215 - Released in 2007 under the 1994 Amendment of the Plant Variety Protection Act. Developed by Dr. Earnest Harvey, Golden Peanut Company, Ashburn, Georgia. Similar to GK-7 in growth habit with early maturity. Similar to AT-108 in pod and seed size. This line carries the high oleic trait and resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus.

C-99R - (Protected Variety 1994-PVPA) C-99R is a mid-late maturing multiple disease resistant variety that has prostrate growth habit, with large pod and seed size for the runner market-type. Seed size is similar to Florida MDR 98. Resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus and white mold is similar to Florida MDR 98. C-99R has darker green foliage than Southern Runner or Florida MDR 98 with similar to better center stem prominence.

FLORIDA-07 - Florida-07 is a medium-late (140+ days) runner market-type peanut with runner growth habit. It has shown excellent yield potential with good grades. This peanut has seed size similar to C-99R. It has good to excellent resistance to TSWV with some white mold resistance, and tolerance to leafspot. Florida-07 has high oleic oil chemistry with good to excellent roasting, blanching and processing characteristics.

FLORIDA FANCY- Developed by Drs. Dan Gorbet and Barry Tillman, University of Florida Agricultural Experiment Station. Released in 2007 under the 1994 Amendment of the Plant Variety Protection Act. Florida Fancy is a Virginia type with medium maturity, pod and seed size is similar to Gregory. Tomato spotted wilt virus resistance is good and the oleic/linoleic fatty acid ration is high.

GEORGIA-02C - (Protected Variety 1994-PVPA & High Oleic Patents) Georgia-02C is 7-10 days later in maturity than Georgia Green with seed and pod size slightly larger, and with high oleic oil chemistry. It has spreading runner growth habit similar to Florunner. Resistant to tomato spotted wilt virus with some tolerance to CBR.

GEORGIA-03L - (Protected Variety 1994-PVPA) Developed by Dr. Bill Branch, University of Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station. Released under the 1994 amendment of the Plant Variety Protection Act. Mid-maturity range with normal oleic/linoleic fatty acid ratio with significantly larger pod and seed size than Georgia Green. Georgia-03L carries a high level of resistance to tomato spotted wilt virus and moderate resistance to white mold and CBR. Intermediate runner growth habit with pink seed coat color.

GEORGIA GREEN- (Protected Variety 1994-PVPA) Georgia Green is a highly productive variety with good stability across many different environments. It was developed at the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment station in Tifton, GA, and released in 1995 by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station. Intermediate growth habit with considerably less vine growth than Florunner. Resistant to tomato spotted wilt virus and well suited to the twin row-planting pattern.

GEORGIA GREENER - (Protected Variety-1994 PVPA) Developed by Dr. Bill Branch, University of Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station. Released in 2006 under the 1994 Amendment of the Plant Variety Protection Act. Medium maturity, normal oleic/linoleic fatty acid ration, with larger pod and seed size than Georgia Green and resistant to tomato spotted wilt virus. Generally darker green foliage than Georgia Green.

McCLOUD- McCloud is a medium maturity (135+ days) runner market-type with runner growth habit. It has shown good to excellent pod yields in Florida and otther state tests with good grades and larger see size than Georgia Green or Anorden. Its main disease resistance is to TSVW. This peanut has high oleic oil chemistry. Flavor, blanching and processing traits are good to excellent.

TIFGUARD - (Variety Protection Pending) Tifguard is a runner type peanut cultivar released in 2007 by Dr. Corley Holbrook, USDA-ARS, Tifton GA which as normal oil chemistry, is mid-season in maturity, and carries root-knot nematode and TSVW resistance. Plant Varity Protection has been applied for under the 1994 Amendment of the PVP Act.

VIRUGARD - (Protected Variety 1994-PVPA) ViruGard is a runner-type peanut variety with mid-oleic oil chemistry. It was released in 1997 by AgraTech Seeds, Inc. ViruGard matures in about 135 days. It is a cross between NC-7 and Florunner and has a spreading bunch growth habit. It is more upright than GK-7 with smaller leaflets. ViruGard has a light pink seed coat color and seed size is larger than Florunner. It is resistant to tomato spotted wilt virus.

YORK- York is a late maturity (150 days) runner type peanut with excellent yield potential and good grades. Seed size is similar to Georgia Green. It has excellent disease resistance to TSWV, white mold and leafspot. York has high oleic oil chemistry with excellent flavor and processing traits.

SERICEA LESPEDEZA

AU GRAZER- AU Grazer was released in 1997 by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station. It is the first sericea lespedeza cultivar tolerant to grazing. This cultivar has higher survival and more vigor under grazing conditions than other sericea lespedeza cultivars. Stems are fine and pliable. Also, it has better forage quality than older cultivars.

INTERSTATE 76- Interstate 76 is a fine-stemmed, leafy, dense cultivar that is short growing and profusely branched. It has a more open growth habit than Interstate. It is recommended for grazing, hay and conservation crops on most soils of Alabama . This cultivar should be adapted to other areas with similar soils and climate.

SOYBEANS

COOK - Cook is a maturity group VIII soybean. It has purple flowers, tawny pubescence and tan pod walls. Seeds are yellow with black hila and dull seed coat luster. It is resistant to major races of frogeye leafspot and has moderate resistance to southern root knot nematode. It is resistant to stem canker and powdery mildew. It is susceptible to the peanut and Javanese root-knot nematode and the soybean cyst nematode.

HINSON LONG JUVENILE- (Protected Variety 1994-PVPA) Hinson Long Juvenile soybean was released by the University of Florida Agricultural Experiment Station as a forage cultivar because of it unique long-juvenile trait, excellent seed quality, and high forage seed yield in late planting when compared to cultivars of similar maturity. It has a determinate growth habit, white flowers, and gray pubescence. Seeds are yellow with buff hila and shiny seed coat luster. It is moderately resistant to frogeye leafspot, southern stem canker, southern root knot nematode and peanut root-knot nematode. It is susceptible to races 3 and 9 of soybean cyst nematode.

HOLLADAY - (Protected Variety 1994-PVPA) Group V maturity. Holladay has yellow seed with shiny and imperfect black hila, tan pod walls, purple flowers, gray pubescence, and determinate growth habit. It is resistant to soybean mosaic virus, frogeye leafspot, and tolerates high levels of soil chloride.

HUTCHESON - (Protected Variety) Group V maturity- Released by Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station. Plants are medium height. It has white flowers, gray pubescence and buff hilum seed. Hutcheson is resistant to soybean mosaic virus, peanut mottle virus, peanut stunt virus, and stem canker.

OSAGE - (Protected Variety 1994-PVPA) Group V maturity. Osage has purple flowers, gray pubescence, and tan pod walls. Seeds have yellow cotyledons with dull yellow seed coat and imperfect black hila. Osage is resistant to souther stem canker, sudden death syndrome, soybean mosaic virus, and frogeye leaf spot.

STONEWALL- Group VII maturity- Released by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, North Carolina Agricultural Research Service and other southern states. It has white flowers, tawny pubescence, and tan pod walls. Seed are yellow with dull seed coat and black hila. Stonewall has resistance to soybean cyst nematode race 3, stem canker, frogeye leaf spot, and tolerance to lance nematode and Phytophthora root rot. It has high yield potential, good lodging resistance, and is medium height.
