As a background to US agriculture, it is useful to understand underlying soil types. Note that Alabama soils are classified as "ultisols". Ultisols are heavily weathered soils, usually with low levels of major and minor nutrients. The most fertile soils occur in the middle of the country and in the valleys of the west.

Agriculture regions are determined by climate as well as by soil type. The regions given in the USDA map to the left are traditional, with the ecological-economic boundaries following state political boundaries. Actual ecological-economic regions are somewhat more complex, and their boundaries do not follow state lines. The USDA has proposed a set of new regions; see the New map. The actual crops that are grown can be found in the map of dominant crops by county (this map is slightly larger than others and might require some scrolling back and forth).
