Research and extension have been sponsored by federal, state and local governments. In recent years, more of the financial burdern has shifted on to the states. Research and extension both likely contributed significantly to advances in agricultural productivity. Some researchers have recently sent us a summary paper on the topic, that they have kindly allowed us to reference here. The effects of research and extension on productivity do vary by region of the country. Hard data on these effects is difficult to get. Research and extension probably have contributed significantly to the recent growth of some alternatives in agriculture, such as aquaculture. However, hard data on this topic is also difficult to get.
