Crop selection depends on local conditions, local markets, and increasingly on the international market. The changes in amounts harvested for a few particular crops (corn, cotton, oats, soy, wheat) in the last century show these various effects, and indicate the importance of these key crops to various regions of the country. The maps referenced to the left have some mild animation (action). The maps show the changes in the amount of crops grown, at five (or ten) year intervals, since 1900, for each state in which any significant amount of the crop was grown. The viewer cannot stop the action, so be prepared to view each map repeatedly and to enjoy the action. Once into the site, the viewer can change the interval to 10 years and/or can speed up the pace. Note that corn production grew until the middle of the century. Soybeans were not even grown until about 1925, then expanded rapidly in importance until the 1980s, then declined in Alabama and other sub-optimal states. By focusing his/her attention on Alabama, the viewer can see the rise and fall of soybeans here as this state responded to international conditions and while soybeans were still profitable on Alabama soils.
