More and more farms in the US are producing under contract. The growth of contract farming has been largest in modern animal husbandry, such as with poultry and hogs-and-pigs. Contract farming seems both to have been stimulated by increased efficiency and to have contributed significantly to increased efficiency. They interact. It is hard to get data on these topics, especially easy-to-understand data. Some researchers have sent us a recent summary paper on the topic, that they have kindly allowed us to reference here.
