Mission
Friends of Shades Creek is a nonprofit organization of local citizens working for the protection of, and responsible development along, beautiful Shades Creek. An all-volunteer organization, Friends of Shades Creek is led by a board of directors and an executive director. We hold monthly meetings on the second Thursday of the month at Homewood Public Library on Oxmoor Road. We are proud to host regular hikes at the Homewood Forest Preserve, an annual creek clean-up in the fall, several canoe trips during the year, and the Salamander Festival in the winter. We are supported by memberships and donations.
Specific issues
Friends of Shades Creek celebrates the spotted salamander with a festival every January. The celebration, which in 2008 attracted more than 300 participants, is an opportunity for people to learn about the beauty of Shades Creek as well as the abundance of wildlife that depends upon the creek.
Comments
FOSC also seeks to involve the public in further enjoyment and understanding of the environmental riches at the Homewood Forest Preserve through a series of family-friendly Sunday afternoon hikes led by experts in a variety of fields. Upcoming 2008 events include:
March 2: Beautiful Spring Wildflowers, Patrick Daniel, Curator, Kaul Wildflower Garden, Birmingham Botanical Gardens
April 6: Flowers and Tiny Leaves of Trees, Henry Hughes, Director of Education, Birmingham Botanical Gardens
April 27: Spring Migratory Birds, Greg Harber, Birmingham Audubon Society
