Responsibilities: Extension

Extension Program:
      
Primary efforts in (Sustainable Agriculture)- Develop and conduct educational programs with major emphasis in beef cattle production, and to support development and implementation of educational programs in small ruminants. During the last two-year additional emphasis in the program area (water quality).

       Alabama cattlemen are primarily cow-calf producers with feeder calves shipped to feedlots in more than 30 states. Current beef cattle programs are focus for producer to gain knowledge to produce a more competitive and quality product. These programs include West Alabama Bull Evaluation Center and Sale, Pasture to Rail, West Alabama BCIA Heifer Sale, Greater Gulf Coast BCIA Heifer Sale and West Alabama Feeder Cattle Marketing Association and just within the last two year Alabama livestock producers need to continuously look for management practices and opportunities that will help them improve efficiency and profitability in their operations, specially during times of depressed markets and increased production costs. During the last two years have been part of the Beef Team. the Alabama Cooperative Extension Beef Team, works in the areas of Beef Quality Assurance "Beef Quality is Every Cattleman's Bussiness". Just recently a brand new program "Alabama Master Cattle Producer". Time is also spent assisitng county Extension program by preparing written information or live presentations on beef cattle management for fieldays and or producers meeting.

       In small ruminants, the effort has been directed to support the needs of the Sheep Industry in the State. This support has included providing organizational assistance and support to the activities of the Alabama Lamb Wool and Mohair Association. Another program with sheep involves the State 4-H sheep efforts, designed to increase youth understanding and skills in sheep production systems through 4-H and FFA projects and exhibits.

Research Programs: At this time is in the area of beef cattle production and management with emphasis on Riperian area protection alternatives for beef cattle operations. This reseach project involves collaboration with faculty in Agronomy and Soil, Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology and Soil Conservation Service (USDA). This reseach project is budgeted to 9/2000. Another research project was completed in 1996 and the objectives were 1) to determine how CRP contract holdersplanned to use their CRP acres after their contracts expired and the annual rental payment stoped and 2) to obtain their reaction to several options for keeping some or all of their CRP in a permanent, soild conserving cover grass.

Service Activities: (University) - Member of College of Agriculture International Committee; Past Mem ber of the English as a Second Language Advisory Committee; Past Chair and Member International Student Committee; Member and Present Chair of the University Traffic Board of Appeal (Wednesday). Past member of Civil Rights/Affirmative Action/Cultural Diversity Task Force.

       (Public and Commodity Groups) - Alabama Cattlemen's Association; Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Association (BCIA); Alabama Farmers Federation; Alabama Lamb Wool and Mohair Association; Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries; Alabama Pure Breed Associations.
