Professional
Activities:
My extension program includes responsibility
for weed management in cotton, small grains, commercial
vegetables, small fruits, apples, peaches, and pecans.
I update and write and the ACES recommendations for each
of these crops yearly. My role as an extension specialist
involves advising county agents, consultants, farmers,
and the general public in weed control measures in
all the crops listed above. In addition, I routinely
provide information to these clients on weed control
and management measures in crops for which I am not directly
responsible; including soybeans, peanuts, corn, forages,
turf, and noncropland. These duties require a large amount
of time and travel. I have averaged over 20 extension
meetings per year across the state during my career,
answered an average of 3 phone calls per day, conducted
yearly inservice training for county agents, installed
yearly on-farm demonstrations,and made numerous on-farm
visits. My goals are to provide technical support and
timely information for my clients to help them succeed
professionally and financially.
My research program
includes responsibility for weed management and defoliation
in cotton; orchard floor management in pecan, and management
of cogongrass (an invasive species infesting almost
one-half of the counties in Alabama). In support of
these activities I conduct applied field research throughout
the state on both AAES outlying units (cotton and pecans)
and private lands (cogongrass). My goals are to devise
systems for managing weeds in cotton and pecans that
are effective and economical; and devising weed control
strategies that will help landowners manage infestations
of cogongrass in forests, highway rights-of-ways, and
private lands.
