Activities:
As ARS Soil Scientist, 2001 - present:
My assignment is that of a Soil Scientist in the USDA, ARS National Soil Dynamics Laboratory, Auburn , AL and as Lead Scientist for the CRIS project "Utilization of Organic Waste to Improve Agricultural Systems and Environmental Quality".
My responsibilities include:
1) Develop animal waste management strategies that are environmentally acceptable.
2) Develop improved soil, water, and crop management practices for controlling runoff and erosion, protecting water quality, minimizing soil compaction, and restoring or maintaining the productivity of crop and rangelands.
3) Determine the impact of farming system management alternatives on fertilizer use efficiency, nutrient cycling, organic matter buildup, and atmospheric CO 2 capture.
4) Develop models for optimizing the use of fertilizers, water, tillage, pesticides, and other inputs for crop production. I am a member of an interdisciplinary team of ARS scientists and engineers that is studying the complex interactions of crop and soil management systems and waste management. I provide leadership for the soil chemistry aspects of the interdisciplinary research, with emphasis on soil fertility and fertilizer practices, crop residues, and tillage requirements and animal waste treatment.
