Activities:
Many soils and aquifers in the
country are contaminated with dense non-aqueous phase
liquids (DNAPLs) such as chlorinated hydrocarbons, many
of which are classified as carcinogens. These liquids
have a density greater than and are immiscible with water,
i.e., they co-exist as two separate liquids. They do,
however, slowly dissolve in water, but their maximum
concentrations are usually low. The final stages of this
research are focused on the development of a constitutive
model to predict residual saturations of DNAPLs. These
residual saturations have been experimentally measured,
but are not accounted for in current models. This research
is in cooperation with scientists from INEEL (Idaho National
Engineering and Environmental Laboratory) and PNNL (Pacific
National Northwest Laboratory).
Field hydraulic
conductivity measurements are often cumbersome and unreliable.
We are currently investigating the use of an air permeameter
to relate air permeability to hydraulic conductivity
values. A prototype has been patented, but is still being
improved. In addition, we are exploring the relationships
between air permeability, as a function of water content,
and pore size distributions. The latter can then be used
to calculate hydraulic conductivity and water retention
functions.
A research project is being developed to
study ground water contamination in coastal areas, where
fresh and salt water meet. This research project is in
cooperation with the Auburn University Civil Engineering
Department.
