15th annual Ag Classic offers golf, clay shoot, fishing

AUBURN—Golfers, anglers and marksmen from the Auburn area and beyond are invited to participate in two days of friendly competition Wednesday and Thursday, May 2 and 3, during the Auburn University College of Agriculture’s 15th annual Ag Classic.

Ag Classic debuted in 1997 mainly as an event to bring College of Ag alumni and supporters to town for fun and fellowship and in the years since has become one of the college’s strongest traditions.

“Ag Classic is a fundraising event, but it’s really more of a ‘friend-raising’ event, offering a tremendous networking opportunity for all of the college’s stakeholders,” said Mark Wilton, director of the College of Ag’s development office. “Its mission is to strengthen support for the College of Ag while fostering lifelong relationships among friends, alumni and donors.”

This year’s Ag Classic will officially kick off at 11:30 a.m. May 2 with a sporting clays tournament at Auburn Oaks in Notasulga. At 5:30 p.m., a social hour, auction and dinner will be held at the Alabama Farmers Pavilion at Ag Heritage Park on the Auburn campus.

The fishing match is set for 7 a.m. May 3 at the 20-acre “VIP Pond” at the E.W. Shell Fisheries Center in north Auburn, while the golf tournament, a four-man scramble, will get under way at Moore’s Mill Club in Auburn at 9 a.m.

Immediately following the golf tourney, prizes will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place teams in the sporting clays and golf competitions and, in fishing, to the anglers with the largest stringer and the largest single fish in both bass and bream.

The deadline for registering for Ag Classic is Wednesday, April 25.

Proceeds from Ag Classic go to the College of Agriculture’s unrestricted fund, which in turn supports areas of greatest need in the college, such as scholarships, recruitment programs and technology and equipment upgrades.
