Ag Heritage Park: Pond

During the summer of 2006, members of Ag Land & Resource Mangement crew completed construction of the 2.5 acre pond, a beautiful addition to the Park.  Plans for 2007 include stocking the pond with bluegill.

The development of ponds and wetlands offers a unique opportunity for developing undergraduate and graduate student research projects in many different areas including horticulture, fisheries, agronomy and soils, biosystems engineering, entomology and plant pathology. The areas around the ponds will provide a natural setting for gatherings of the agricultural community for fellowship and community development.

To provide good spawning areas for future occupants of the pond, sand and gravel beds were placed in several locations around the pond.  In addition, a number of reefs were constructed to provide fish shelters and attractors.

The Alabama Catfish Producers are providing two fish feeders and the AU Fisheries & Allied Aquacultures Department will soon be populating the pond with fingerlings - - sunfish, shell crackers, catfish and bass.
