Guidelines for Funding for Summer Teaching
College of Agriculture
Limited funding is anticipated for faculty to teach during the summer semester. The following guidelines will be used to determine the allocation of funds available.
- The faculty member must have a fall semester plus spring semester teaching load that is at least 6 credit hours. For example, one 3 hour course in the fall semester and one 3 hour course in the spring semester is 6 credit hours. Courses with enrollment ranging from the university minimum up to 30 will count as one class; enrollment of 30 to 60 will count as 2 classes. However, courses with less than the minimum enrollment requirements do not count as part of the 6 hours.
- Summer salary will not be funded for a course that was not also taught in fall or spring with an enrollment that met the university’s minimum enrollment unless there is a justifiable reason why the course needs to be taught in the summer. University minimum enrollment is: 15 for lower division undergraduate classes (1000-2000); 12 for upper division undergraduate classes (3000-5000); 8 for graduate level classes (6000-7000); and 5 for doctoral level classes (8000).
- A faculty member who receives funding for a summer course must teach at least 2 courses as defined in item 1 during the preceding fall and/or spring semester, unless there are no other faculty member in the department available to teach the course.
- Summer salary will be funded at the rate of 3.7% of salary per credit hour. Credit for lab sections is given on a 2-to-1 basis. For example, a 2-hour lab section counts as an additional credit hour. However, if the lab is taught independently by a GTA/GRA then a faculty member will not receive credit for the lab section.
- Summer salary will be funded for a maximum of 6 credit hours from the Dean’s Office instructional funds. Therefore, the maximum that can be received is 6 credit hours times 3.7% of salary per credit hour, or 22.2% of nine month base salary.
- The final decision for using college funds to support summer teaching will be made by the dean. The department head may decide to allocate departmental funds (e.g., departmental gift accounts, salary savings)
- Additional funding may be available to the faculty who have earned funds from outside sources, such as distance learning fees and teaching grants. These will be available to the respective faculty member who has earned them without regard to teaching loads during the previous academic year.
