Nepotism Policy

College of Agriculture and Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station

  1. The Auburn University Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual states in section 2.10.6 that “No person will be hired, either as a regular or temporary employee, for a position over which a member of the employee’s immediate family exercises supervisory or managerial authority.”

  2. Immediate family is defined as: spouse, son, daughter, parents, stepchild, stepparent, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandchild, grandparent and grandparent-in-law.

  3. Managerial authority is defined as: Authority extending vertically through one or more organizational levels of supervision or management.

  4. This policy applies to regular, limited term, temporary employment, or employment through Temporary Employment Services. This policy applies to the following employee groups: students, administrative professional and university staff.

  5. Tenured, tenure-track, or non-tenure track faculty are excluded from this policy. In cases where tenured, tenure-track, or non-tenure track faculty are employed in the same department in a position over which a member of the employee’s immediate family could exercise supervisory or managerial authority, the individual will be supervised by the department head/chair. All compensation issues relating to the employee will be determined by the department head/chair.

  6. Family members may be hired in the same department provided the employee exercises no supervisory or managerial authority over the compensation and/or work assignments of the family member. The employee cannot provide any form of compensation for the family member.

  7. Current employees (as of January 1, 2002) will be allowed to complete their current term of employment if they are currently in a limited term or regular employment status. If the family member leaves or has a break in service, this policy will apply to future re-employment. All temporary and TES employees not in compliance with this policy as of January 1, 2002 will be terminated immediately.
Effective: January 1, 2002
