About the Soils XRD Database Project

This database uses Perl scripts and Java applets to plot user selected XRD data.

Over 300 raw (ascii) files of XRD data from soils were directly exported from the X-ray diffractometer. This initial data set was contributed by the S-207 Regional Project cooperators. We are planning to expand the database. If you are willing to contribute clay mineral XRD data, please contact us.

XRD analysis was conducted at the Mineral Analysis Laboratory at Auburn University. Samples were prepared at the University of Florida mineralogy laboratory.

Ascii files containing information about the XRD data were constructed. These files and the raw XRD datafiles make up the database. Perl scripts were written for searching the database and for file handling.

The plotting program is largely based on Graph2D , Java classes developed by Leigh Brookshaw. It was further modified by Rich Walker and Kate Ozalas to incorporate evaluation tools for XRD patterns (e.g., d-spacing, peak area, height, width at half-height, and centroid). We hope to incorporate more interactive evaluation tools. Suggestions are welcome.
