In October, the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System will host a series of meetings that we believe will make a difference in the way agricultural programs are structured in this century. Called Agriculture and Forest Roundtable meetings, these will be held on six days in October at sites around the state. In these meetings we want to hear your suggestions about how we at your land-grant colleges can help those of you involved in agriculture. The Roundtable meetings are a followup to a meeting of Alabama agricultural leaders and university officials from Auburn, Alabama A&M, and Tuskegee universities, held in June on the AU campus. Three critical areas of need were discussed at the meetingthe image of agriculture, the role of agriculture in rural development, and alternative enterprises to traditional agriculture. We hope to follow up on some of the challenges and opportunities discussed at this meeting and to define new areas of economic opportunity. These Roundtable meetings will be held October 3, in Clanton; October 5, in Greensboro; October 10, in Ozark; October 12, in Bay Minette; October 24, in Oneonta; and October 26, in Decatur. The site of some of these meetings was still being decided at press time, but these locations will be set by the time you read this, and you can find these locations by contacting your county extension office. If you have an interest in agriculture, I personally encourage you to attend any or all of these meetings. By working together and planning wisely, I am confident we can help agriculture and forestry continue to be our leading industries in Alabama. |
