ABOUT OUR TEAM

Auburn Masters Swimmers will serve as host of the USMS Long Course National Championships in August 2011.

Coaches: Tom Healey , Lionel Moreau, and David Chilelli

Auburn Masters Swimmers is a club for lap swimmers, fitness swimmers, triathletes, and competitive swimmers. We are made up of students, faculty, and people from the wider Auburn community and encompass a wide range of abilities and ages.

Auburn Masters is open to anyone over the age of 18 and to (almost) all levels of ability; however, our group is not intended for those who need beginning swimming lessons. As a swim club, we have regularly scheduled workouts with a qualified swim coach who develops different workouts for different groups of swimmers. Coaches work with each swimmer to improve her or his swimming technique, both to improve performance and to avoid injury while training.

We workout in the James E. Martin Aquatics Center at Auburn University, one of the best pools in the country. Click here to see a photo of and learn more about the Aquatics Center. In addition, Auburn University opened a new outdoor 50 meter by 25 meter training facility in July 2007 and we swim there April through November, weather permitting.

Workout Schedule

Auburn Masters Swimmers have organized workouts six days a week throughout the year, though the schedule varies when the university is closed between semesters, during major holidays, or when the Aquatics Center is being used for other events. We welcome visiting Masters swimmers. Our normal workout schedule:

Monday: 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Tuesday: 6:00 - 7:15 p.m.

Wednesday: 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Thursday: 6:00 - 7:15 p.m.

Friday: 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Sunday afternoon: 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.

Costs

1. USMS: All Auburn Masters swimmers must join the national organization, United States Masters Swimming. USMS membership provides individuals and the club with insurance coverage, subscription to USMS Swimmer (the official magazine of USMS), the ability when traveling to swim with other USMS teams across the country, and is required to compete in USMS swim meets. Membership is $37 on a calendar year basis. You can register with USMS as a member of the Auburn Masters Swimmers (AMS) team by going to this link.

2. Aquatics Center: Masters swimmers need to become members of the Aquatics Center to use the pool. Students automatically are considered members. AU employees pay $40 every three months or $120 for the year, alumni pay $50 every three months or $150 per year, and other community members pay $70 every three months or $250 per year. Family rates for non-students also are available; enquire at the pool (844-4182). As an alternative to quarterly payments, the option exists to pay $2.00 each time you swim. Please bring exact change and pay the lifeguard at the desk before you enter the locker rooms. The lifeguard will give you a release of liability form to sign.

3. Club Dues: All team members pay club dues. Club dues cover the expenses associated with hiring of coaches and renting pool space at the Aquatics Center.

Students pay $67.50 per semester and all others pay $135 per semester ($15 & $30 per month, collected at the start of the semester). Fall semester runs from August 15 to December 31st. Spring semester runs from January 1st to May 15th. Summer term (May 16 to August 14th) dues are based on the same monthly rate.

USMS sanctions swimming competitions at the local, zone, region, and national levels. Some Auburn Masters swimmers participate in swimming meets, but this is strictly voluntary. Information on USMS competitions Nationally and in the Dixie Zone are available on the web.
